Beijing: Following Donald Trump’s suggestion that Russia, the US, and China all cut their defense budgets in half, Beijing declared on Tuesday ( Feb 25 ) that its defense spending was “entirely necessary.”
Russia has significantly increased military spending since launching its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but as hostilities continue in the Asia-Pacific area, spending has even increased in China in recent years.
China has always followed the path of tranquil growth, according to Lin Jian, a spokesman for the foreign government.
” Limited defense spending is absolutely necessary to defend national independence, security, and development passions, and to keep world peacefulness,” he said.
Lin continued, noting that China has always “persisted in planned monetary and defense development and does not participate in arms conflicts with any nation.”
The comments were made a moment after Chinese President Xi Jinping and Putin had a phone conversation about the continuing conflict in Ukraine.
Putin claimed in a televised interview on Monday that Trump’s suggestion for 50 % defense budget cuts was” a good idea,” adding that he could not speak for China.
Beijing’s foreign government earlier this month stated that Trump may “take the lead” in any military spending reduction plans.
