Bank Negara: nation's payments systems remain secure

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara has assured users which the nation’s payment techniques remain secure following a potential data breach incident involving iPay88 (M) Sdn Bhd, a company providing payment gateway services to banks and retailers.

The main bank said inside a statement that forensic investigations on the event are ongoing.

It said the breach originated from and it is confined to iPay88’s payment card systems and does not involve vulnerabilities in the banks’ techniques.

“Financial organizations in Malaysia furthermore observe strong authentication methods for online cards transactions, including compelling cardholders for additional confirmation of certain transactions considered to be more dangerous.

“This reduces the risk of fraudulent transactions occurring. For non-authenticated transactions, particularly purchases from overseas retailers, customers will not be responsible for any fraudulent or unauthorised transactions that could arise from this incident, ” it stated.

Bank Negara said it has advised banks to instantly notify affected cardholders of additional safety measures to further safeguard them against risks of fraudulent or even unauthorised transactions.

It said banking institutions have also heightened their fraud risk management and monitoring of dubious or fraudulent actions for affected credit cards.

Customers are encouraged to immediately notify their own banks if they notice any irregular or even unauthorised transactions on their cards.
