The Shell Selamat Sampai Varsity Challenge, a road safety program for students pursuing primary schooling, came to an end on December 7, 2023, in Kuala Lumpur. Themed” Develop!” Captivate! Secure Life! The goal of the challenge was to encourage Indonesian college and university students to suggest cutting-edge STEM road safety solutions.

The winner was Team APU from Asia Pacific University of Technology &amp, Innovation ( APU), who presented their project, Guardian Defense Unit ( G. D. U). The project focuses on addressing vital street safety issues while preventing injuries and reducing the severity of injuries in motorcycle vehicles.

The winning team claims that G. D. U. is crucial to improving motorcycle safety and making travel safer for all. Aaron Raj Bhatti and Cajun Tai Ka Joon, who were pursuing Bachelor of Mechatronic Engineering, Ronak Robert Vijai, a graduate of the program, and Sharen Chrisan Fabian Perera, an electrical and electronics engineering scholar, made up the staff.

The staff brought a variety of skills to the job, including programming, CAD drawing, technology integration, and an entrepreneurial thinking, under the guidance of Dr. Lau Chee Yong, senior lecturer at APU’s School of Engineering. &nbsp,

A bike rear blind position detection system called the Guardian Defense Unit was developed in response to actual accidents. A framework integrated with a 2D Light Detection and Ranging ( LiDAR ) module mounted on top of the motorcycle’s number plate is created for the project using the Robotic Operating System and nbsp. When an object is within a certain threshold range, the LiDAR detects it, and LEDs alert the rider by changing color ( blue for warning, green for danger ). &nbsp,

The party leader, Aaron Raj Bhatti, emphasized the significance of their job in saving lives, saying,” The job was inspired by a real-life incident that I faced.” Therefore, we collaborated on a job to lessen the likelihood of incidents involving other road users.

Being the first from a private school to win the competition typically dominated by people institutions, Team APU’s success is an important accomplishment. A champion trophy, individual champion medals, and a cash prize of US$ 2, 100 ( RM10, 000 ) were given to the team.

” Winning the Shell Selamat Sampai Varsity Challenge is a great achievement that will significantly increase the group’s knowledge and skills while charting an encouraging job path,” Lau said, expressing his satisfaction in their accomplishment.

This success demonstrates their skill in dealing with problems in the real world, emphasizing teamwork and important problem-solving in addition to technical proficiency. The competition’s interdisciplinary nature has given them a comprehensive approach to problem-solving, encouraging adaptability, and promoting successful communication,” he continued.

A panel of experts, including representatives from the Ministry of Higher Education, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, and Shell Malaysia’s High-Rise Travel road safety consultant, decided on the grand finale in 2023.

The 12-week project growth stage, virtual boot camp, and judging sessions were part of the challenge, which started with a movie proposal comment and had the theme of utilizing STEM to address road safety issues.

One of the five champion groups, Team APU, faced off against students from the Universities of Malaya, Putra, Kebangsaan, and Teknikal Malaysia Melaka.

The team’s accomplishments demonstrate how private organizations have the potential to lead the way in inventions for road safety. The G. D. U. player’s dedication to excellence and development in the areas of road safety and transportation is strengthened by the reputation, which creates new possibilities.
