'Anies who?': Indonesia's Gerindra to pick new candidates for Jakarta governor, closing door on Prabowo's presidential rival

JAKARTA: One of Indonesia’s largest parties, the Great Indonesia Movement Party ( Gerindra ) has confirmed that it will nominate new candidates instead of Anies Baswedan for the upcoming Jakarta gubernatorial election.

In contrast to Gerindra’s past support for Mr. Anies in the 2017 Jakarta ballot, the decision is made. Mr. Anies ran for president in the February common election but came in second place, with previous public Jokowi Subianto winning in the three-horse culture.

In the Jakarta vote, which will get a new government for the area that will quickly lose its position as the country’s capital, Gindra Secretary-General Ahmad Muzani said they prefer to support fresh, established individuals. On August 17th, Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day will be replaced by Nusantara, the new investment in eastern Kalimantan.

According to Mr. Ahmad, Gerindra is attempting to win a new mayor of Jakarta while alliance partners are currently pursuing the election.

We have “young and new candidates for the Jakarta election,” Mr. Ahmad said as reported by the Jakarta Globe on Thursday ( Apr 18 ).

When asked about the possibility of supporting Mr Anies, he quipped:” Anies who? “

With the support of Gerindra, President-elect Prabowo Subianto, and the Prosperous Justice Party ( PKS), Mr. Anies won the 2017 governorship of Jakarta.

With the support of two parties: the National Democratic ( NasDem ) Party and PKS, Mr. Anies ran for president after serving in office with Muhaimin Iskandar as his running mate.

With Mr. Anies and his chair Prabowo and his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka even taking part in the presidential contest held on February 14, Gerindra and other events parted way.

The General Election Commission (KPU) has chosen Mr. Prabowo and his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka to win the election, obtaining 58 votes. 59 % of the total votes cast. Anies-Muhaimin Iskandar trailed with 24. 95 % of the vote.

Mr Anies, alongside another fruitless presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo, is contesting the benefits, alleging electoral fraud and abnormalities. The Indonesian Constitutional Court is currently in charge of the problem, which is scheduled to rule by April 22.

If the judge rejects the issues, Mr Prabowo and Mr Gibran, who is also the cheerful President Joko Widodo’s eldest brother, will get their oath of office in October.

In the wake of the election debate, there is now more rumors about Mr. Anies ‘ possible election for the Jakarta gubernatorial election in November, with NasDem and PKS expressing their support for him.

Both events, however, avoided mentioning Mr. Anies as their prospect because the controversy surrounding the presidential election has not yet come to an end.

Given Mr. Prabowo’s success in the February presidential election, Gerindra is comfortable in naming its individual candidate for the Jakarta governor’s election.

Mr. Ahmad said his party is considering a new candidate for the Jakarta election, but he was unwilling to name the candidate because the issue is also being considered internally.

Mr. Airlangga Hartarto, the head of another significant group, stated last week that Gerindra and the party were prepared to support former West Java government Ridwan Kamil for the position of Jakarta government.

Golkar and Gerindra are currently putting together prospects for the country’s November local elections, according to Kompas media store.

Due to his previous positions as governor of West Java and president of Bandung, Mr. Ridwan, also known as Kang Emil, is seen as a rising sun in Indian politics.

Indonesia held its political and legislative elections on Feb 14, and may keep local elections on Nov 27 to appoint 38 administrators, 416 governors and 98 leaders across the country.
