AN ACTUAL GAMBIT?
Ng’s return comes after the Indonesian government made a legal effort to persuade Washington to hand over the prisoner.
In early September, US law firm Amsterdam & Partners LLP notified Judge Brodie that the Malaysian government was declaring its intention to become an interested party in the ongoing wrangle between the US government and Ng overwhen the former banker will begin serving his jail sentence in a US prison.

Judge Brodie was specifically informed that the” United States Department of Justice may find the US Court’s authorization to return Ng to Malaysia before he commences serving any term of imprisonment in the United States” in a series of letters dated March 2019.
The letter, which was signed by attorneys Peter J. Sahlas and Cameron Ashouripour, stated that” based on communications received by Malaysia from July to September 2023, the United States is pushing forward with a significantly different interpretation of those agreements.” & nbsp,
The letter to Judge Brodie was dated September 5, three weeks after the company was chosen to represent the Malaysian authorities, and it was reviewed by CNA.
