GE2025: Red Dot United says will step aside in Jalan Kayu SMC for Workers’ Party to contest

SINGAPORE: The Workers ‘ Party ( WP ) looks set to contest in Jalan Kayu SMC for Singapore’s May 3 General Election, after the Red Dot United ( RDU) party announced  on Tuesday ( Apr 22 ) that  it was stepping off.

In a statement sent to the internet, RDU’s secretary-general Ravi Philemon said his group had been in discussions with WP management about the single-seat hospital.

” During those markets, they expressed interest in contesting Jalan Kayu. As conversations progressed, it became evident they intended to field a prospect that. They requested for Jalan Kayu,” he said.
  
” After watchful deliberation—both with the WP authority and within our own vote committee—we have made the difficult decision never to challenge in this district. This decision was made with one guiding process: to work in the best interest of the people of Jalan Kayu, the best attention of Singapore people. ”  

WP has been engaged in outreach efforts in Jalan Kayu SMC, amid intensifying sensation around a possible battle with the decision People’s Action Party’s potential prospect Ng Chee Meng.  

A source close to WP likewise told CNA before that the opposition party was good to challenge in the single-seat hospital in the future General Election.

People living in the recently carved out district north of Singapore have also seen WP in the area late, with some receiving brochures handed out by individuals.  

At least one resident said he recognised Dr Ong Lue Ping  from the Institute of Mental Health as one of the WP individuals who have been doing walkabouts.  

News store 8world even recently reported that WP individuals were seen distributing pamphlets soon after PAP’s news that labour key Mr Ng may be contesting in Jalan Kayu SMC.  

The former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office was part of the PAP slate that lost Sengkang GRC to WP in GE2020.

The WP has so far kept silent on where it would contest, though it has revealed 14 new potential candidates in its lineup.

But contesting in Jalan Kayu SMC would be consistent with the party ‘s  focus on northeastern parts of Singapore.
