Taiwan clears up, slowly reopens after hit from Typhoon Krathon

KAOHSIUNG: Southern Taiwan worked on Friday ( October 4 ) to repair damage from Typhoon Krathon’s slam into a major metropolis while the majority of the island resumed work and financial markets re-opened.

Krathon, today downgraded to a tropical depression, made landfall in the key port town of Kaohsiung, inundating roads with liquid, blowing out skylights in some houses and sending dust flying as record-breaking winds hit.

While the rest of Taiwan resumed its work on Friday, the governments of Kaohsiung and Pingtung region, along with the neighboring Pingtung state, suspended work to remove downed branches, pumps out storm waters, and clear up rotten streets.

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai, writing on his Facebook page, said some parts of the city got more rainfall than during the last wind, Typhoon Gaemi, in July.

The city government is doing its best to repair the damage, he wrote,” Given the lengthy duration of the wind, coupled with the strong winds and heavy weather.”

Tsai Ming-an, a 51-year-old expert, was cleaning up his home after flood of about 20cm came into his whole residence on the ground surface.

” I have not witnessed gusts like that.” It was so awful”, Tsai said.
