Indonesia court finds drugmakers at fault over toxic cough syrup, awards parents

A local company in Javarta was ordered by an Indonesian court to pay each family who died from acute kidney injury or had serious injuries after consuming toxic cough syrup up to 60 million rupiah ( US$ 3,850 ).

More than 200 babies in Indonesia perished from the wound, and about 120 more, some of whom had disabilities that caused their parents to face financial hardship.

Indonesian authorities have cited weak oversight by medical companies, including local drugmakers and some vendors, as well as the government’s food and drugs agency ( BPOM), in sessions into the overdoses.

In overdue 2022, more than 20 people launched a legal suit against the company, the health department, and many companies.

Afi Farma and CV Samudera Chemical, two drug companies that were found at fault in the poisonings by judges at the Central Jakarta court, were found guilty in a ruling that was made late on Thursday ( Aug 22 ).

Both the BPOM and the health ministry were found innocent of wrong.

The court ordered the businesses to pay payment of 50 million dirhams for kids who died and 60 million dirhams for kids who were injured to the families who brought the lawsuit.

Kids had asked for 3.4 billion dirhams for each child that died, and 2.2 billion dirhams for individuals. Indonesia’s 2023 gross domestic product per person was almost US$ 5, 000, files from the government’s Statistics Bureau shows.
