Malaysia mulls developing own social media platform for its citizens: Minister

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that the Indonesian government is considering the idea of creating a social media program especially for its residents.

He claimed that this is because some social media app developers are making money off Malaysians but do n’t protect their users.

What steps have Facebook taken to ensure that Malaysia’s conditions and use of their program are secure given that it was estimated that Facebook only made US$ 600 million last year?

” They lack determination, so we need to analyze and assess the situation. Some nations have attempted to create their unique social media platform, but it is not simple. We will look into it, “he told reporters on Sunday ( Aug 4 ) night.

Following Meta’s new decision to remove all social media posts related to Palestine, Mr. Fahmi said he had even met with star number Aznil Nawawi.

During the conference, he shared his views regarding social media usage that should be communicated to Mr Aznil’s fans.

He agreed to let me send this message to his followers by reminding him that children under the age of 13 should not use social advertising.

However, Mr Fahmi said he will join with Meta on Aug 5 in Putrajaya to explain its treatment of Palestine-related information from the Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s social media accounts.

He stated that the government would take steps to prevent Meta from removing any information from a Sunday night pro-Palestinian rally.

They have consented to do so. A list of the Prime Minister’s Facebook accounts as well as the formal accounts of various media outlets can be found here. We’ll see if they follow through, but I think they will keep their word, he said, adding that the government may demand that they keep their word.

At least eight million registered users in Malaysia adhere to the new regulation model that was introduced last week for all social multimedia and internet communications systems.

These include Meta’s Instagram, ByteDance’s TikTok as well as Elon Musk’s X app, among people.

Beginning January 1st of the following year, protection under the new course license will start.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has disclosed that businesses are required to apply for a license annually and that it is one month in length.

Companies that fail to register for the licensing by Jan 1 does face charges of not more than RM500, 000 or five times imprisonment, or both, if they continue to operate in the country, local media reported.

Mr. Fahmi had previously stated to CNA that the new school licensing system will strengthen Malaysia’s congressional muscle to make the internet safer for both children and their families.
