Motorcycle lane planned for Phuket's Kathu-Patong tunnel

The Transport Ministry has instructed the Expressway Authority of Thailand ( Exat ) to construct a dedicated motorcycle lane inside the traffic tunnel for the Kathu-Patong expressway project in Phuket.

The 3.98km road will pass through Nak Kerd Hill through an increased four-lane path and a 1.85km customers tunnel, according to deputy prime minister and transportation minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit.

The road may interact with Highway 4029 in tambon Kathu, he said, noting the task is for about 16.19 billion ringgit.

The board of Exat, according to Mr. Suriya, approved a resolution in November to delegate the project’s legal work, including maintenance and operations for the 30 km following project phase, which connects Muang Mai to Koh Kaew and Kathu.

Additionally, the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning raised health problems, as the expressway’s customers hole may be shared by cars and motorcycles, posing increased chance of road accidents.

The Transport Ministry therefore instructed Exat to design a lane for scooters and decrease the four-lane pipe for cars to two lanes. He added that the bicycle lane’s length will be about 5 meters wide.
