No wage hike on Labour Day

On Labor Day, the government has recently announced that the lowest daily wage will not be raised to 400 baht. Otherwise, it may hold off until May 14 when a bilateral committee’s findings are released.

Karom Polpornklang, assistant government official, confirmed yesterday that the minimum wage increase may not get effect on May 1.

He said that before the new income can begin, it must first be approved at the 22nd joint pay commission appointment scheduled for May 14.

The bilateral committee’s monthly meetings are required to approve all important plans, including the implementation of a regular wage increase, he claimed.

The May 14 meeting will offer thorough clarity about how the 400- baht normal rate may be put into practice, he said.

Since he is a politician, Mr. Karom added that Labour Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn will not be involved in the decision regarding the income increase, which might be considered political meddling.

According to Mr. Karom, Mr. Pipat may just serve as an advisor in the decision-making process.

The state has always given attention to the well-being of its employees. As they contribute tremendously to the country’s growth, it is the government’s standard responsibility to take care of them”, said Mr Karom.

Before any price adjustments can be made, a dialogue between the three parties– the workers, the employers, and the government– has been held through the compensation committee. With the 400-baht goal in mind, the board will decide how to implement the new compensation in a timely manner, he added.

The new required pay, which was previously announced as a surprise on Labour Day, May 1, will not be immediately imposed, according to earlier reports.

He explained that the announcement was made solely to obtain a goal, and that he anticipated the pay increase to occur by the end of this year, ideally by Oct. 1.

” I personally believe that the current situation calls for a boost in the income because the costs of products have increased without a solution.”

” As a result, when customer rates have climbed, we need to be sympathetic towards employees and improve their wages,” the minister said.

It is only appropriate that the minimum wage be raised across the nation, he said, because customer price increases affect regions all the same, including Bangkok.
