Singaporean family released by Hong Kong police after fight breaks out over ‘noise’

SINGAPORE: A Singaporean family of three have been released, after an argument with a local man over noise at a dai pai dong or open-air food stall led to the arrest of all four individuals.

In response to CNA’s queries on Wednesday (Dec 20), Hong Kong police confirmed the family’s nationality, saying they received a report on Dec 10 around 10.30pm from a passer-by about a dispute at a restaurant on Woosung Street in Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon.

Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that a 50-year-old Hong Kong man, whose surname is Liu, got into an argument with a 54-year-old Singaporean man over “noise issues” at the restaurant and allegedly attacked him with a glass cup.

His wife, 52, and their 17-year-old son – both Singaporeans – were also reportedly involved in the altercation.

Hong Kong police said that the local man suffered injuries to his hand during the fight, while the Singaporean man suffered head and hand injuries. The woman and the teenager sustained hand injuries, and were taken to a hospital by ambulance. All four individuals were arrested on suspicion of assault causing bodily harm, according to Hong Kong police.

They added that the local man was released on bail pending further investigation. He will be required to report to the police in early January, while the three Singaporeans have been released.

Videos of the incident, which made its rounds on social media and was widely reported by Hong Kong media, showed a man in a light blue T-shirt lying on his side as two other men sit on top of him.

A woman in a white T-shirt can be seen running towards them, shouting: “What are you all doing? Let my husband go!”

Other videos also showed an ambulance and local police at the scene of the incident.
