Telegram platform unresponsive to Singapore police’s requests to remove scam content: Shanmugam

SINGAPORE: According to Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam on Monday, November 6, the amount of time it takes for suspected online fraud records and content to be deleted depends on how flexible social media and e-commerce channels are to police demands.

More than 5, 900 online transactions and adverts involved in suspected frauds have been flagged by authorities for eradication since 2021, according to Mr. Shanmugam in a written response to Member of Parliament Gerald Giam’s( Workers’ Party – Aljunied ) political issue.

While Carousell and Facebook do” take longer, occasionally up to five days or even longer ,” Shopee” would typically take around one to two days to respond.”

He continued,” Telegram has not responded to police calls on the end of the spectrum.”

Scam transactions and content must be deleted as soon as possible when flagged because they can cause harm, according to Mr. Shanmugam.

In order to lessen the number of people who could be duped by scammers, we have been working with online businesses to shorten their turnaround times.
