ISLAMABAD: As Pakistan struggles with overlapping social, economic, and security crisis, the election commission announced on Thursday( Sep 21) that elections will be postponed in January of next year.
Since the country’s most popular legislator, former prime minister Imran Khan, was imprisoned for bone and barred from running for office, a caretaker government has been in charge of Pakistan.
The election commission claimed it needed more time to redesign divisions after the most recent population population, despite the fact that polls were supposed to be conducted within 90 times.
On November 30, the complete list of divisions will be released. Following that, a 54-day vote schedule will be followed by the elections, which will take place in the final month of January 2024, according to the payment.
The time might not be set in stone, according to one social analyst.
Hasan Askari Rizvi told AFP that while the statement of a time is” a positive and significant sign ,” Pakistani politicians are so erratic that it is impossible to predict what will occur after three weeks.
But as long as all events are permitted to run for office and compete in elections, all the miseries of the common people brought on by prices and price increases will have a direct impact, he continued.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan expressed concern about the potential for organizations to sway the political process earlier this month.
It stated in a statement that” the border of districts must also be completed quickly and efficiently and under no conditions used as an excuse to postpone the elections no more.”
The test of the latest caretaker government is to see not only whether it will protect and respect people’s right to protest calmly, but also whether its response will be to the issues that ordinary citizens are mobilizing about, aside from ensuring that completely, fair, and reputable elections take place.
