Indonesia reports massive rise in rice imports to replenish stockpiles

JAKARTA: As the nation’s statistics agency reported on Friday, wheat exports increased significantly for the first eight weeks of the year compared to the same period in 2022. This is because the government wants to recharge its stockpiles.

During a lecture on the nation’s business information, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, the acting chief of Statistics Indonesia, stated that the most populous nation in Southeast Asia, with 270 million people, imported 1.59 million metric tons of wheat in the January to August time, up from 237, 146 tons imported during the same time last year.

She claimed that 802,000 plenty of the shipments came from Thailand, followed by 674, 000 lots from Vietnam, 66 000 tonnes from India, and 45,000 tons, from Pakistan.

To lessen the effects of the El Nino weather pattern, which brings dry weather to Southeast Asia, the state tasked state purchasing food company Bulog with importing 2.3 million tons of rice this time. However, a Bulog standard stated earlier this week that 453, 000 lots have not yet been contracted.

” The price of grain is rising globally. We want to boost our proper rice reserve, but also importing it is difficult ,” said Indian President Joko Widoo at a distinct event on Friday. He added that export restrictions by some nations are what make it difficult to obtain rice from abroad.

Crops are in danger due to hot weather in important agricultural areas across Asia, which has increased rice charges by up to 20 %. Top exporter India-led nations have restricted shipments to control inflation and guarantee food security for their citizens.

According to the National Food Agency, Indonesia’s full grain imports for 2023, including those for hotels and restaurants, are thought to be 2.9 million tons.
