New exhibition in London's V&A to explore rise of South Korean pop culture

An upcoming Victoria and Albert Art gallery (V& A) exhibit will explore the particular rise of South Korean popular culture from its early roots to its put on the global stage.

Opening this Sept, Hallyu! The Korean Wave will certainly feature around two hundred objects including K-pop costumes and stage sets alongside photography, sculpture, fashion, video and pop culture collectables.

Among the pieces will be an immersive re-creation of the bathroom from the 2019 thriller Parasite plus costumes from the hit Netflix series Squid Sport.

Furthermore on display will be important outfits worn by different generations of K-pop stars through PSY to Aespa and BTS. It will also present works through artists including Nam June Paik, Ham Kyungah and Gwon Osang and close to 20 high fashion looks by designers such as Tchai Betty, Miss Sohee and Minju Kim.

The exhibit will delve into the meaning of its title simply by exploring the trend known as “hallyu” – meaning Korean Influx – which is the particular increase in global popularity of South Korean culture since the 1990s.

The rise first began rippling across Asia before reaching all corners of the world and later challenging global pop lifestyle today.

The particular exhibit will use cinema, drama, songs and fandoms to help explore the topic plus highlight the cultural impact it has experienced across industries, particularly in the world of beauty plus fashion.

“South Korea has fascinated the world over with hallyu, its vibrant and creative popular culture, which has transformed the country’s image in one devastated by the Korean War to that of a leading cultural giant in the era associated with social media and digital culture today, ” said Rosalie Kim, the curator of Hallyu! The Korean Influx .

“This phenomenon has been amplified by tech-savvy plus socially conscious worldwide fanbases, further increasing the profile plus relevance of Hallyu around the world, and wish delighted to be bringing its energy and dynamism to the V& A this autumn in the first exhibit of its kind. ”

The exhibit Hallyu! The Korean Influx will certainly run from September 24 to 06 25.
