SAF conducts risk assessment of parachute jumps after Red Lions parachutist’s hard landing

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has convened a “high level assessment” from the risks involved in parachute jumps  after a Red-colored Lions team member had  the rough landing on the National Day Parade .

Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen stated on Saturday (Aug 13) that the SAF wanted to “look comprehensively” not only at the incident involving Third Bring about Officer (3WO) Jeffrey Heng, but also earlier times National Day Parades and previews.

“SAF wanted to observe whether there were structural changes that increased the risk, ” stated Dr Ng.

According to Dr Ng, the SAF has gone through a lot of information from itself as well as the National Environment Agency, including the wind rates of speed on the day of shows and the engineering involved.

Giving the particular update at a National Day event in Toa Payoh Central, Dr Ng stated that the interim assessment is that mitigation actions are needed, which the SAF is putting in location.

“Obviously we all take these dangers very seriously.   We know that the Red-colored Lions are a favourite for NDP vistors, and we want to do it safely, ” he or she said, adding that when the conditions designed for parachuting are not secure for any particular time, there ought to be the trigger to declare it to be dangerous.

Under current standard operating procedures, if clouds avoid parachutists from viewing the landing web site, the jump will be cancelled, said Dr Ng.

“But we need to also add within conditions at the performance site, ” he added.

Doctor Ng added the interim report suggested the need for a different ancestry path to give the parachutists more reaction period.

But he added: “These are technicalities which the specialists must look into, and after that they must validate this and they must practise it so we need to leave it to the experts to do this. ”
