NEX ceiling incident caused by water leakage due to ‘plumbing issue’, says mall

SINGAPORE: Seeping water due to a domestic plumbing fault caused areas of a ceiling on the NEX shopping center in Serangoon to fall on Saturday (Aug 6), said a spokesperson for that mall.

Videos circulating on social media on Sunday showed a gap in the ceiling associated with Basement 1 on the mall, and bits and pieces of plaster on the ground of Basement second .

The area in which the plaster had fallen was also cordoned away from to shoppers.

In response to CNA’s queries, a NEX spokesperson said on Monday that the mall was alerted with a Level 1 renter to a “water backflow incident” at about 5. 55pm on Saturday.

The particular mall’s onsite procedures team subsequently determined a “plumbing issue” originating from the tenant’s floor trap, leading to water to spread to the tenant’s retail area and leak down to Basement 1 and 2 .

“Contractors were deployed to fix the particular choke which was resolved by 11pm, ” said NEX.

However , remnant water continued in order to leak down through the unit and affected “some tenants” across Basement 1 plus 2 .

“For the basic safety of our tenants plus shoppers, we advised affected tenants in order to suspend operations till the issue (was) fully rectified, ” additional NEX, while apologising for the inconvenience caused to tenants plus shoppers.

As of Monday, the particular affected areas are already checked and rectified and Basement two is open plus accessible to buyers, said the shopping mall.

In August 2020, a ventilation duct from Shaw Theatres in NEX collapsed during a movie screening, dropping across several series of seats and injuring two people.

Investigations later exposed that this had been caused by overloaded support  mounting brackets for the duct, due to the weight of accumulated water.
