BEIJING: China’s President Xi Jinping visited Uzbekistan on Wednesday (Sep 14), state media stated, ahead of a meeting along with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
“Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived here (in Samarkand) Wed evening to pay a situation visit to Uzbekistan and attend the 22nd meeting of the Authorities of Heads associated with State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), ” the official Xinhua news agency mentioned.
The SCO – established within 2001 as a politics, economic and security organisation to rival Western institutions – will bring together Xi and Putin, and also leaders from Indian, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and other ex-Soviet Central Asian countries.
Xi has been met at the airport terminal by officials including Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Perfect Minister Abdulla Aripov, Xinhua said.
The Chinese chief was to hold discussions with Mirziyoyev upon “deepening bilateral cooperation, and on regional and international issues of shared interest, ” it said, adding that Xi “looks forward to participating in the SCO Samarkand Summit, and dealing with all parties to hold forward the Shanghai in china Spirit. ”
Xi travelled to Samarkand from Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan , where he met with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in his initial trip overseas because the early days of the coronavirus pandemic.
