‘Willing to take a bet’: Singaporeans heading to Malaysia for stem cell therapy on knees

Mr. Lam began looking for alternatives and discovered a Malay firm that was promoting stem cell therapy in Selangor. &nbsp,

International Cancer Therapy & Stem Cells Technology ( ICT &amp, SCT) is a company that, according to its website, works closely with local, board-certified laboratories and physicians to provide both domestic and international clients with services like stem cell treatment.

” I initially had some misgivings because I didn’t know how reliable they were and the quality of what they would introduce into me,” said Mr. Lam. &nbsp,

He traveled to Kuala Lumpur in July of last year to see a private office where he had been receiving stem cell therapy for both knees. &nbsp,

According to the company’s Mr. Lim, the procedure involved the extraction of stem cells from donated umbilical cord cells, followed by the culture of these tissues in a qualified lab. The potential of plant cell to evolve into several different kinds of tissues that might be able to assist with some parts of the body is unknown.

The educated cells were finally injected back into the shattered thigh bone, where they developed into brand-new bone tissue, according to Mr. Lim. &nbsp,

The client, Mr Lam, reported a difficult phase but final success.

He recalled that a few hours after the treatment, my knees started to swell and the pain was intense.” The problems lasted for about three to four days.” &nbsp,

” After that, the swelling decreased and my left thigh felt fine, but the pain persisted in my right leg,” according to Mr. Lam, so I went back for a second round of injections in November for my right leg, and this day, the swelling decreased for a year, but after that, I had no more problems in my leg,” he said.

” Both knees are totally fine now, I can dance, run and even jump with no pain”, he said, adding that he paid RM30, 000 ( US$ 6, 700 ) in total for the treatments.

IN SINGAPORE, WHILE NOT APPROVED AS MAINSTREAM TREATMENT

In an effort to repair leg tissue, Mr. Lam is one of the few Singaporeans crossing the border to have stem cell therapy. &nbsp,

Some patients have been going to private clinics in Malaysia to wager on stem cell therapy because the therapy is now not approved as a major medical assistance for tissue repair in Singapore. &nbsp,

These individuals are reluctant to accept new treatments, such as total hip replacement or microfracture operation, where small holes are drilled in a joint’s surface to prompt the body to insert new tissue.

Since it first opened in 2007, Kuala Lumpur Sports Medicine Center (KLSMC), which has performed more than 1, 000 stem cell methods to heal thigh bone, reported that it sees one Singapore person per year on average. &nbsp,

Singaporeans have a lot of excellent medical care back home, so it’s only when they come to us when they need it for a reason, such as having no other choice,” said KLSMC consultant orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Saw Khay Yong.
