Wan Ubumrung quits Pheu Thai over “fraternisation”

Thin Ubumrung, a past Bangkok MP, has resigned from the judgement Pheu Thai Party after receiving criticism for fraternizing with a group rival in a subsequent localized vote in Pathum Thani.

Mr Wan tendered his resignation at the Election Commission (EC ) on Monday, with immediate effect.

He claimed that after the election results closed on June 30 and that he was asked by the party to explain his resignation as chairman of the Provincial Administrative Organization ( PAO ) in Pathum Thani.

Mr. Wan met Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit Toopkrajang, a candidate for the PAO and a close friend of the Ubumrung community, to provide condolence to the original police director.

Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit was defeated by Pheu Thai’s member, Charn Phuangphet, by less than 2, 000 seats.

Mr Wan’s display of kindness to an opposition upset the Pheu Thai management. On July 9, he was then asked to explain himself to group leaders and Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

Mr. Wan told the audience that meet Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit, who had long-standing relationships to former top Thaksin Shinawatra, was a positive experience, and that Pheu Thai values him highly.

The meeting took place after the polls closed, so the outcome of the election would not have been affected by the conference.

When he walked into the Pheu Thai professionals ‘ meeting on July 9 on Monday, Mr. Wan said he had no idea what to do with the party at the time. But, after talking with the professionals, it was evident the gathering was displeased with him.

” It always crossed my mind what I did was so bad, despite my being apologetic about the encounter”, he said.

” I ca n’t stay put now that the party executives are unhappy with me,” I said.

Mr. Wan added that the party may no longer have valued him as a result of his defeat to the Move Forward Party ( MFP ) in the last general election held in Bangkok’s Bang Bon constituency.

” But I’m not the only Bangkok prospect for Pheu Thai who lost.” The MFP defeated the group in all but one of its 33 divisions. Pheu Thai may reveal on its surveys performance”, he said.

He added that he hoped the party would remove his father, Pol Capt Chalerm Ubumrung, as a record MP but that his dad could keep his MP position and defect to a different party.

Mr. Wan stated that he was receptive to offers from businesses looking to hire him as a member. He acknowledged that he and Bhumjaithai Party chief Anutin Charnvirakul have a strained relationship.

However, Ms Paetongtarn said the chat with Mr Wan was over and done with. ” There’s nothing more to it”, she said.

She accepted Mr. Wan’s decision to leave the gathering even though she did not want her to.

The Pheu Thai president reiterated that the group had no plan in this case regarding Pol Capt Chalerm.
