Hefty taxes could deter some from helping during crises, says Guntouch

A shovel truck driver who offered to help remove thick layers of dirt from flooded areas in northern Thailand was charged with operating an heavy vehicle on Wednesday evening and was fined 320, 000 baht.
Guntouch Pongpaiboonwet, better known as Gun Jompalang, claimed he was called to assist the vehicle after returning from a Chiang Rai disaster relief operation and being called to a Department of Highways weighing place.
The vehicle was marked with a “volunteer for disaster victims” mark.
According to Mr Guntouch, he offered to protect the driver’s demand and support other volunteer owners in similar circumstances.
The interpersonal media advocate also expressed concern that such expenses might stifle people from offering support in times of need. His article received some negative net comments, with many internet users asking the Department of Highways to clarify the situation.
Northeastern Thailand has experienced heavy downpours as a result of Storm Soulik’s influence, which has caused widespread flooding. Some homes are left with meters of mud and debris as the water recedes in some places.
