Vietnam signs nuclear cooperation deal with Russia’s Rosatom

On Tuesday ( Jan 14), during Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin’s visit to Hanoi, Vietnam and Russia signed an agreement on nuclear power and some assistance agreements.

Vietnam wants to restart its nuclear energy program after it’s been put off for a while because it needs to increase energy production to support its expanding business sector, which is a major force behind its economy.

Vietnam maintains close ties with Moscow, Washington and Beijing.

Russian oil and gas companies are active in Vietnam’s region of the South China Sea, including in areas that China has previously claimed as its major supplier of military equipment, and there are also Russian oil and gas companies active in those areas.

Rosatom, Russia’s position nuclear power corporation, and Vietnam’s state-owned power utility EVN agreed to enhance cooperation in the atomic sector, according to a mutual document listing their written cooperation agreements.

The material of the offer is not common.

Rosatom’s affiliates and senior officials have been subject to numerous restrictions from the US. The US Department of State made the most recent round of actions public last year.

Rosatom described US sanctions against its top leaders as “unfounded and unconstitutional” and a “form of cruel opposition from hostile says.”

In accordance with a contract signed by Vietnam’s defense ministry and Russia’s technology department, Moscow even agreed to transfer a seafaring research vehicle to Vietnam.

” The two factors will review, explain and find answers to the limits in diplomatic assistance”, Vietnam’s authorities said on its website, in reference to the talks signed on Tuesday.

Financial transactions between Hanoi and Moscow have been hampered by American sanctions against Russia for its military activity in Ukraine.

Offers on cooperating in cellular communications and the digital economy were also signed on Tuesday.
