Vietnam president resigns amid major anti-graft purge

Vietnam President Nguyen Xuan Phuc has retired, state media mentioned Tuesday, after times of rumours he involved to be sacked as part of a major anti-corruption drive that has seen several ministers fired.

Phuc provides “submitted his resignation from his assigned positions, quit his job, and retired”, state news company VNA said.

Phuc’s unexpected departure is an extremely unusual move in communist Vietnam, where political changes are normally meticulously orchestrated, with an emphasis on cautious stability.

State media said the communist party had ruled he was accountable for wrongdoing by older ministers under him during his 2016-2021 stint as primary minister, before he became president.
