Vietnam President Nguyen Xuan Phuc has retired, state media mentioned Tuesday, after times of rumours he involved to be sacked as part of a major anti-corruption drive that has seen several ministers fired.
Phuc provides “submitted his resignation from his assigned positions, quit his job, and retired”, state news company VNA said.
Phuc’s unexpected departure is an extremely unusual move in communist Vietnam, where political changes are normally meticulously orchestrated, with an emphasis on cautious stability.
State media said the communist party had ruled he was accountable for wrongdoing by older ministers under him during his 2016-2021 stint as primary minister, before he became president.
Two mouthpiece prime ministers had been sacked this 30 days in an anti-corruption free that has led to the particular arrest of lots of officials, with many of the graft allegations associated with deals done included in Vietnam’s Covid outbreak response.
Phuc “took politics responsibility as chief when several authorities, including two mouthpiece prime ministers and three ministers dedicated violations and weak points, causing very serious consequences”, VNA said, quoting the party main committee’s official statement.
Previously this month, the country’s rubber stamps National Assembly removed Pham Binh Minh and Vu Duc Dam from their jobs as deputy primary ministers.

At least 100 authorities and businesspeople, including Dam’s assistant, are actually arrested in connection with the scandal involving the submission of Covid-19 assessment kits.

Communist Party head Nguyen Phu Trong, the architect associated with what is Vietnam’s largest-ever anti-corruption drive, is a result of step down within 2026.
“Some politicians will attempt to get the (top) reward and because of the competition from their rivals — in this case Mr Phuc is one of them — they may want to get rid of him to clear the way for the other applicant to get the top job. ”
