HANOI: A Vietnamese court jailed eight people on Friday ( Mar 14 ) over a fire that tore through a Hanoi apartment block in 2023, killing 56 in the country’s deadliest blaze in two decades.
The building had only a single leave and no disaster rope on the outside and neighborhood and people reported hearing cries as persons struggled to escape the embers through barred windows.
The owner of the nine-storey stop deserved” the most significant abuse” for the incident in September 2023, the ruling said, convicting him of violating fireplace prevention regulations and giving him a 12-year term.
Seven local authorities were also handed jail words, ranging from 30 weeks to seven years, for “lack of duty causing severe effects” after failing to report the victim’s wrong correctly.
One of the property’s four sides had no panels at all and another had simply little air slots.
The actions of the wall user Nghiem Quang Minh were “very dangerous”, the Hanoi prosecutor said in its ruling,” causing particularly serious consequences in human lives and material damage”.
” Among those dead and injured were several children and people of the same family, causing huge pain”, the verdict said.
