US Treasury Sanctions Myanmar warlord and militia linked to cyber scams

Washington, May 5, 2015: The US imposed new sanctions against a rebel, his two sons, and the army he controls for facilitating cyberscams aimed at Americans, human smuggling, and cross-border trafficking, according to the Treasury Department.

The Karen National Army, Saw Chit Thu, and his two brothers Saw Htoo Eh Moo and Saw Chit Chit, both of whom received punishment, according to a declaration from the ministry.

According to the speech, the Karen National Army has huge controlled a place on the Thai-Burmese borders, which is home to numerous cyberscam syndicates.

As troops from Myanmar’s decision dictatorship and rebels battle for control of the border city of Myawaddy, which handles more than US$ 1 billion in border trade annually, the outpost has turned into a crucial battleground.

“Cyber fraud activities, such as those conducted by the KNA, generate billions in profits for legal kingpins and their partners, while depriving subjects of their hard-earned savings and sense of security,” said Deputy Secretary Michael Faulkender.

Treasury pledges to use all available means to destroy these networks and keep those responsible for their actions in order to profit from these legal schemes.

Saw Chit Thu’s relations to Myanmar’s military leaders have helped him advance in his place, as evidenced by an honorary title for “outstanding effectiveness” given to him by coup key public Min Aung Hlaing in November 2022.
