US says China used Pelosi's Taiwan visit as pretext to alter status quo

WASHINGTON: US Indo-Pacific coordinator Kurt Campbell said upon Friday (Aug 12) that China “overreacted” to US House of Representatives Loudspeaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan plus used it as a pretext to try to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.

The particular American response would be patient and efficient, and the US existence and posture in the region would account for China’s more destabilising habits, Campbell told reporters in a call.

“China has overreacted and its actions remain provocative, destabilising and unprecedented, ” Campbell said, calling it part of an “intensified pressure campaign” against Taiwan.

“It has not ended and we expect it to carry on to unfold within the coming weeks plus months, ” Campbell said, adding that will several Chinese warships remain around Taiwan, a self-governed island.
