MALAYSIA’S Courts AT CROSSROADS, SOME SAY
Doctors and retired magistrates noted that Malaysia’s court is at a juncture.
” Any decision to appoint someone who is young and who was parachuted in would give a negative message to the organization and the shareholders. It would be “dialing back to the dark times,” a retired lawyer who spoke on the condition of anonymity said.
The so-called “dark ages” relate to the conflict between former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad and the courts in 1988, when Mahathir fired Salleh Abas and dismissed two different Federal Court magistrates who held court sessions to support their nephew judge.
After he claimed Mahathir was meddling in the judiciary by developing amendments to limit its powers, the late Salleh was fired.  ,
At the time, the judiciary was widely considered to be relatively independent.
