Indonesian authorities have opened an investigation into a nearby Chinese-language paper over the release of an incomplete representation of the national flag on its front site, which has drawn the king’s rebuke and criticism in the country.
Local news outlet New Straits Times ( NST ) reported that Bukit Aman police have confirmed that a Sin Chew Daily chief editor and deputy chief sub-editor will be called in for questioning on Thursday ( Apr 17 ).  ,
Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain told NST on Thursday that” the deputy director played a part in approving the picture of the symbol while the assistant chief sub-editor is the graphic design artist involved in the production of the picture.”  ,
The Home Affairs Ministry stated in a statement on Wednesday ( Apr 16 ) that the crescent moon symbol, which was allegedly a grave lapse, was removed from the first page of the newspaper on Tuesday because it represents Islam as the federation’s religion.  ,
The picture was provided with a review on this week’s state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Malaysia.
According to the department,” The work not only demonstrates a lack of expertise but it may also stymie harmony in our multicultural society,” according to Malay Mail.  ,
A show-cause letter was also issued on Wednesday, along with an official announcement that it had begun looking into the case under the Emblems and Names ( Prevention of Improper Use ) Act of 1963 and the Printing Presses and Publications Act of 1984.
The Home Ministry also emphasized that respect for the Jalur Gemilang, which represents the country’s independence, unity, and identity, must be practiced.  ,
The government was quoted as saying by Malay Mail,” Any failure to comply with the standard features of the national flag could lead to legal activity.”  ,
Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, the ruler of Malaysia, also spoke out about the event on Wednesday, arguing that the national flag represents a representation of independence and national identification and should never be made fun of or misrepresented.  ,
According to Sultan Ibrahim in a speech on Facebook, “publishing an image of the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent moon, as seen on the top page of a neighborhood Chinese-language news, can cause people sensitivity and is unacceptable.”
