U-turn bridge collapse kills two on highway

SAMUT SAKHON: Two people were slain and a third wounded when a beam dropped from a U-turn flyover onto the Rama II Highway in Muang district upon Sunday night.

It happened near the 34  km marker on Rama II Highway, the particular Thon Buri-Pak Tho road, in front of Vibharam Samutsakhon Hospital about 8. 30pm.

A huge cement beam, about 10 metres long and weighing about 5 tonnes, together with the concrete rail safeguard. fell onto 3 vehicles passing beneath the flyover, which have been closed for servicing.

The beam landed directly on top of a Chevrolet car and partly on a pickup truck and an empty oil tanker on the Bangkok-bound side of the highway.

A woman within the car’s front traveler seat was smashed and killed. Its driver was picked up of the car simply by eyewitnesses. Five individuals travelling in the pickup narrowly escaped damage as the beam crunched the front of the vehicle

2 men working on the flyover were injured, and one later was a victim of his injuries.

The collapse caused a visitors jam. Motorists could use only the frontage lane. Highways officials closed the expressway lanes for fear of the flyover structure had been unsafe.

The Highways Section closed the old U-turn flyover on June 23 for servicing because of wear and tear.

It was greatly used by big trucks and the surface has been badly eroded, within places down to the particular steel reinforcing fishing rods. The maintenance work was earlier fixed for completion at the end of this month.
