Two killed in South Korea wildfire, hundreds told to evacuate

More than 200 residents in 15 southern villages have been instructed to leave their homes, according to authorities on Saturday ( Mar 22 ), and at least two firefighters have died in a wildfire in South Korea.

According to South Korea’s inside ministry, the blaze, which started in Sancheong state on Friday evening, prompted the implementation of 304 staff, along with 20 helicopters.

Two firefighters have been found useless, while two people are still missing, according to a fire company official, who spoke to AFP on Saturday.

If the two missing persons were rescuers, it wasn’t immediately known.

According to the Korea Forest Service, wildfires even affected a number of other areas in central and southern regions.

The forest agency has issued its highest level of” severe” fire warnings in 12 locations, including Busan and Daejeon, as well as North and South Gyeongsang provinces.

Sancheong is located 250 kilometers east of Seoul in the South Gyeongsang state.

According to his office, South Korea’s acting president Choi Sang-mok instructed appropriate agencies to “mobilize all available tools and staff to rapidly extinguish” the fire.

Some kinds of severe weather, such as wildfires or heavy rain, are well-established to be related to climate change.

Other extreme weather events, such as exotic storms, floods, and forest fires can be the result of a combination of numerous complex factors.
