Two dead, five injured in South Korean bridge collapse

According to fire officials, two people died and five others were hurt on Tuesday ( Feb 25 ) at a construction site for an expressway in Cheonan, South Korea.

Spectacular images of what appeared to be a part of the bridge collapsing, blowing a huge cloud of smoke into the air, was broadcast in local advertising.

According to a declaration from the National Fire Agency, two persons died, four of whom were severely wounded, and one of whom was only slightly hurt.

According to the statement, authorities are still looking for three people who were buried beneath the dust.

An official from the interior ministry informed AFP that the wounded were being taken to hospitals.

The incident took place at around 9.50am ( 8.50am, Singapore time ) in Cheonan, around 82km south of Seoul.

Five 50m metal buildings supporting the highway bridge collided after being hoisted into position by a crane, according to the Yonhap media company.

Acting President Choi Sang-mok has issued essential guidelines to mobilize all the tools and personnel needed for the recovery procedure.

According to statistics from Seoul’s employment government, more than 8, 000 work-related incidents occurred in the country from 2020 to 2023.
