TMD warns of ‘hot summer’

Sukhothai, Lampang, Tak and Mae Hong Son will experience extreme heat in the coming months, with the highest temperatures ranging from 40–43 degrees Celsius, The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) forewarns.

TMD director-general Chomparee Chompurat on Sunday announced the official end of the cold season in Thailand. Monsoon covering the upper part of the country has changed direction from the northeast to the southeast, an indication that summer is approaching, she said.

Ms Chomparee said the country should brace for a hot summer, as the TMD has forecast that average high temperatures will be about 35.5C until the end of summer around mid-May.

Sukhothai, Lampang, Tak and Mae Hong Son are expected to face temperatures of 40-43C this year, she said.

It is expected that the northern and northeastern regions will experience cooler temperatures during this summer, but people in those regions must prepare for thunderstorms and strong winds from mid-this month to late-next month.
