Thirty-five killed, dozens wounded in south China car ramming: Police

BEIJING: Thirty-five people were killed and 43 wounded after a car ploughed into pedestrians on Monday ( Nov 11 ) evening in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai, local police said on Tuesday.

Although at the time, police just reported injuries to those who had been hurt, while films of the affair appeared to have been removed from social media.

But on Tuesday, authorities said that a” severe and violent attack” had occurred at Zhuhai Sports Centre, revealing the death toll to become 35.

The 62-year-old vehicle, surnamed Fan, had driven” a little SUV through the wall and forced his way into the state’s sports heart, ramming citizens who were exercising on the inner streets of the activities centre”, police said in a statement.

After the officers “immediately stopped Fan and took him to the hospital for treatment,” they discovered him cutting himself with a knife in his vehicle.

He is now unconscious after self-inflicting injuries to his chest and other body parts, according to police, and is “unable to be interrogated.”

According to the official Xinhua news agency, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “all-out work” to address the injured and has “demanded punishing the culprit in accordance with the law.”
