Thaksin to skip court hearing on hospital stay

Ex-PM may send a written statement to the investigation into whether his word was delivered as ordered.

At the beginning of a court hearing on June 13 to address allegations that his jail sentence was not properly enforced, the previous prime minister’s attorney said.

Winyat Chartmontri added that Thaksin will not be present at the receiving at the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions in person.

Mr. Winyat stated that his client would turn in indication of disease to the jury that evening, and that his legal team is preparing files and information related to Thaksin’s shift from Bangkok Remand Prison to the Police General Hospital.

The attorney said the judge’s examination is unavoidable because all parties adhered to the rules and procedures, and that Thaksin’s move was in accordance with the Department of Corrections ‘ regulations.

After returning to Thailand in August 2023, Thaksin, 75, received an eight-year jail sentence that was later reduced to a year by a royal forgive. He was not imprisoned for even one day, and after six months, he was ready for pardon.

The Department of Corrections allowed him to maintain his stay at the hospital for 180 days because his circumstances in prison was threaten his life, despite the law’s exceptions that allow him to get treatment outside of prison for 120 days.

Chousak Sirinil, the PM’s business secretary, claimed the judge inquiry had set the record straight as the community continues to question whether Thaksin received preferential treatment.

In a recent political argument, Thaksin’s daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was likewise grilled about the controversy.

Mr. Chousak argued that many people believe that being in a hospital is not confinement, but that corrections officials are fully authorised to administer the judge’s word.

According to him, the court’s decision will determine whether Thaksin’s health records will be made public. He added that Mr. Charnchai claimed that his shift did not need court approval.
