BANGKOK: Thailand welcomed more than 35 million international tourists in 2024, surpassing the government’s target, as the country strives to revive its sluggish economy, officials said on Monday ( Jan 6 ).
The country’s essential hospitality sector accounts for about 20 % of its GDP, but it has struggled as a result of the COVID-19 crisis and the changing traveler habits.
According to the Ministry of Sports and Tourism, more than 35 million people visited the kingdom in 2024, or roughly four million shy of the pre-pandemic great of that year.
After experiencing a decrease post-pandemic, China has regained its position as the top destination for tourists in Thailand, with more than six million tourists coming in, followed by Malaysia and India.
According to tourism minister Sorawong Thienthong, the kingdom, which is known for its pristine beaches and recognizable temples, generated more than 1.6 trillion baht ( US$ 46 billion ) from tourism in 2024.
Under former prime minister Srettha Thavisin, the Thai authorities implemented a number of policies to draw international tourists, including a free card program for Chinese and Indian customers.
The government now has a 39 million visitor destination for 2025 after exceeding its 35 million tourist goal from 2024.
Tourists are spending less than they did before, despite the World Bank’s prediction that the nation will surpass its pre-pandemic levels in 2025.
