Thailand says to discuss tariffs with United States on Apr 21

Bangkok: A government spokesman announced on Monday ( Apr 14 ) that Thailand’s finance and commerce ministers will lead a delegation to the US to meet with Trump administration officials and demand relief from the government’s planned heavy tariffs.

According to a spokesperson from Jirayu Houngsub, an advance group led by Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira and Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan may travel to the United States on Thursday for discussions with secret business organizations.

He predicted that the Thai group will match with US government staff on Monday, April 21.

Under US President Donald Trump’s industry policies, Thailand is subject to a 36 % tax, and it intends to use a 90-day pause to create a response.

Last year, the United States was Thailand’s largest export business, with US supplies totaling US$ 55 billion. Washington has estimated a$ 45.6 billion bilateral trade deficit with Thailand.

According to Jirayu, Thailand’s approach will concentrate on sectors in which the US and Thailand share interests, such as animal food, expanding markets, and boosting US imports.

He added that there would be stricter audits of Thai exports to make sure other nations weren’t using Thailand to defraud US income.

Prior to this, Thai authorities have recently stated that they will raise US imports, lower tariffs on wheat, and boost joint investments in the country.
