Yingluck Shinawatra, a self-exiled former prime minister, was cleared of negligence by Thailand’s Supreme Court on Monday ( Mar 4), according to her lawyer and the local media in a case that dates back to when she was in office in 2013.
Yingluck, a well-known part of the powerful Shinawatra family, has been residing abroad for the past six times to avoid prison for a previous misdemeanor for negligence after her government was ousted in a 2014 military coup.
The ruling of the court, whose party Pheu Thai is currently in power, is the most recent positive development for the strong Shinawatra home. Thaksin Shinawatra, the country’s billionaire leader, just received a commuted word and was released from jail.
The judge had not yet released a statement regarding the decision.
Previous leading Thaksin’s sister, Yingluck, was recently released after serving a year-long prison sentence that had been commuted to a month.
