TAIPEI: The head of Taiwan’s top China policy body said on Thursday ( Sep 12 ) that the democratically-governed island will never surrender in the face of intensifying pressure from a “more aggressive” Beijing.
Taiwan is regarded as a part of its place by China, which has stated that it will never use power to enslave the self-ruled nation.
In recent years, Beijing has mounted military and political pressure on Taipei, flying aircraft, drones, and naval vessels around the area on a nearly daily basis.
The head of Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, which deals with China-related issues, claimed on Thursday that Beijing’s “attempts to revoke the Republic of China ( Taiwan )’s ) sovereignty have threatened regional stability and peace.
Our resolve to protect our independence and political system has never been so strong in the face of the “unprecedented stress.” This is our base line”, Chiu Chui-cheng said in an English-language conversation at a military conference in Taipei.
” On this level, there is no room for compromise. We never let go of China’s growing and sabre-rattling stress. Taiwan not surrenders”.
Chiu even warned that Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s policy towards Taiwan will “only be more assertive and hostile” as he hopes to attain “national unity” with Taiwan.
He claimed that” this passion is unquestionably the main reasons for the Taiwan Strait’s hazards.”
