Taiwan Strait not China’s, Taipei says after Canadian warship passes through

The Taiwan Strait’s defense ministry stated on Monday ( Feb 17 ) that any efforts to stoke tensions threaten global security after Beijing criticized Canada for sailing a warship through the troubled waterway.

The US Navy and sometimes ships from allied countries like Canada, Britain and France, transport the sea, which they consider an international lake, around once a month.

China, which claims Taiwan as its own place, claims that the proper lake belongs to it, despite Taiwan’s view that it is an international lake.

The initial US Navy ship to pass through the sea since Donald Trump’s election last month sparked a furious response from China, which claimed the objective raised security risks.

China, according to Taiwan’s defense department, conducted” shared combat readiness patrols” in response to those sailings.

” The Taiwan Strait is absolutely not within the reach of China’s sovereignty”, the department said in a statement.

China is attempting to make the sea appear to be an “internal issue,” it continued. The strait’s freedom of navigation by “friendly and allied” nations by is one that highlights its legal status.

The government said that “free and democratic countries around the world are also concerned about peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”

” Any deliberate attempt by the communist’s defense to incite pressure in the Taiwan Strait may pose a real threat to international safety.”

Both the Taiwan Affairs Office and China’s defense department responded to inquiries for comment right away.
