US Speaker Nancy Pelosi has left Taiwan after a brief yet controversial visit.
Ms Pelosi — the most senior ALL OF US politician to visit in 25 years – left on Wednesday right after meeting leaders in the capital Taipei.
But her visit, as part of a wider Oriental tour, sparked fury in Beijing right after she ignored the warnings not to visit the island.
Taiwan is self-ruled – but China sees it being a breakaway province that will eventually unite by it.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said “those who play with fireplace will not come to a good end, and those who have offend China is going to be punished”.
“The United states of america is violating China’s sovereignty under the guise of so-called democracy, ” he added.
The US moves a diplomatic tightrope with its Taiwan plan.
On one hand, it abides by the “One China” policy, which recognises only one Chinese authorities, giving it formal connections with Beijing and never Taiwan.
But it also maintains a “robust unofficial” relationship with the isle, which includes selling weapons for Taiwan to protect itself.
As speaker of the US House of Representatives, Ms Pelosi is usually second in line towards the US presidency, at the rear of Vice-President Kamala Harris.
In response to the vacation, China announced what called “necessary and just” military drills in seas close to 10 miles (16 kilometres) from Taiwan.
The workouts – which will start on Thursday and last for 5 days – will be held at in some of the tour’s busiest waterways and can include “long-range reside ammunition shooting”.
A US formal told the Reuters news agency upon Wednesday that Beijing may seek to use the visit to ramp up tensions. China’s protection ministry spokesman Sunlight Li-fang admitted that some of the exercises may breach Taiwan’s territorial waters.
President Tsai Ing-wen stated Taiwan is dealing with “deliberately heightened military threats”, adding it “would not back down and that Taiwan is going to do whatever it takes to improve its self-defence capabilities”.
Taiwan’s port government bodies have asked ships to find alternative paths to avoid the exercises, and Transport Minister Wang Kwo-tsai said Taipei was discussing with neighbouring Japan and the Philippines to find alternative aviation routes.
It comes after days of escalating stress in which Chinese warplanes already ventured as far as the median line, the unofficial divide separating China plus Taiwan in the seas between them.
