Taiwan delegation to take ‘highest blessings’ to Trump inauguration

TAOYUAN: The head of Taiwan’s delegation to next week’s inauguration of Donald Trump as United States president said on Saturday ( Jan 18 ) he was going there to extend the island’s “highest blessings” to the US.

Taiwan, which China views as its own place, enjoyed strong support from the first Trump presidency, including regularising arms sales which have continued under President Joe Biden. Trump, however, made Taiwan uncomfortable by calling for its defense to spend.

Before heading to Washington, Taiwan’s parliament speech, a senior member of the opposition Kuomintang party and a candidate for president in 2020, announced at Taoyuan aircraft that several foreign officials were also on their way despite the threat of large snowfall at the border.

” We extend our greatest gifts to the US national team and to the people of the United States,” according to our committee members, who also are bringing this passion to the United States to represent (our ) 23 million individuals.

Han is being accompanied by a cross-party group of seven different politicians.

Vice President Han Zheng is leading China’s committee, and Chinese President Xi Jinping and Trump spoke on Friday via phone about Taiwan.

Han’s party typically favours close relationships and discourse with China, but denies being pro-Beijing.
