TAIPEI: Taiwan and China need to talk to each other to achieve peace given the “multifold changes” in the international situation, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te said on Monday ( Feb 3 ), calling for dialogue instead of confrontation.
Lai, who China detests as a” separatist”, has repeatedly called for talks with Beijing, which has stepped up its military and political force against the democratically-governed area it sees as royal Chinese territory.
However, Taiwan and China are under pressure from US President Donald Trump’s fresh administration, which has threatened similar actions against imported electronics and tariffs on China. Taiwan is the only country with a dominant industry.
Lai said in a speech in Taipei to users of the Chinese business community who have invested in China that Taiwan and China’s popular opponents were natural disasters and that their typical purpose was the well-being of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
” So, we may, particularly at a time of multifold changes in the global situation, have a great dialogue and exchanges between the two sides of the sea in order to achieve the goal of peacefulness”, he said.
Taiwan’s potential can only be decided by its citizens, Lai added, but it very much welcomes discussions with China on the basis of justice without conditions and discourse may change confrontation.
