PARIS: Singapore’s world number 52 Zeng Jian was eliminated from the Paris Olympics in the women’s singles round of 32 after losing to India’s Sreeja Akula on Wednesday (Jul 31).
At the South Paris Arena, Olympic debutant Zeng lost to her 25th world-ranked opponent 11-9, 10-12, 4-11, 5-11,12-10, 10-12.
This was the second head-to-head meeting between the pair, with Zeng emerging victorious when they faced off last year.
The 27-year-old had been Singapore’s only table tennis representative left at the Paris Games after beating Croatia’s Ivana Malobabic 4-3 in the previous round.
Eighteen-year-old Izaac Quek was eliminated in the round of 64 despite a strong showing against Slovenia’s Darko Jorgic, while Zhou Jingyi also exited the Games at the same stage after losing 1-4 to Romania’s world number 10 Bernadette Szocs.
