The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is urging people to take part in this year’s Earth Hour event by switching off their lights for one hour this Saturday.
Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt said that Earth Hour would take place on Saturday, March 25, from 8.30-9.30pm, simultaneously with other 7,000 cities in 190 countries worldwide.
He encouraged people living in Bangkok and all across Thailand to participate.
Moreover, Mr Chadchart said that there would be a candlelight activity performed in five locations in Bangkok, namely the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Arun, the Giant Swing, Golden Mount Temple and Rama VIII Bridge.
All 50 district offices across Bangkok have also invited entrepreneurs to throw a candlelight activity at shopping malls and hotels to promote the Earth Hour event and raise awareness about energy and climate change.
According to the BMA, last year’s Earth Hour cut electricity use in the capital by 78 megawatts, equivalent to 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission worth 176,172 baht.
Mr Chadchart also said the BMA has teamed up with the Thailand Development Research Institute, Chulalongkorn University, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit to promote sustainable energy on March 25-26 from 4.30-9.30pm at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.
