Suspected insurgent killed in firefight with soldiers

NARATHIWAT: A suspected insurgent wanted below court warrants for 3 security-related cases was killed in a firefight with an army specific operations unit within Muang district of the southern border state on Saturday, law enforcement reported.

On Saturday afternoon, the army device laid siege to house No 120/3 in Moo 2 community in tambon Kaluwo Nua following a tip-off from informants that a suspected insurgent had hidden there.

At about five. 30pm, the believe fired sporadic shots from the house.

At six. 30pm. the suspect opened fire in an attempt to break through the siege. A firefight ensued.

Following the gunfire stopped, the soldiers cleared the region and found the suspect – Abdul Hakam Chema, 32 – lying lifeless in the house, police said. A. 45 gun was found close to his body.

Abdul Hakam was wanted below three warrants. The first one, dated March 23, 2017, was intended for shooting to demise a man, Pakorn Likekanwong, in Narathiwat upon Feb 10, 2017. The second, dated 06 14, 2018, was for an attack upon defence volunteers in Yi-ngo district, Narathiwat, on Dec 30, 2016. The third, out dated July 11, 2018, was for grenade attacks at three spots in Narathiwat on June 19, 2017.

Lt Gen Kriangkrai Srirak, the 4th Army Region leader, offered condolences towards the family of the believe, saying the government bodies had acted within the scope of the regulation.
