Squid Game star found guilty of sexual misconduct

SEOUL: South Korea’s Squid Game professional O Yeong- su has been found guilty of sexual misconduct, a local prosecutor said Friday ( Mar 15 ), after he was charged with assaulting a woman in 2017.

The 79-year-old won the Golden Globe Award for best supporting artist in a set for his performance as a relatively fragile old man in the mega-hit Netflix futuristic thriller in 2022, making him the first North Korean to do so.

According to the Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Court, the artist received an eight-month jail term that would be suspended for two centuries.

He has been likewise ordered to total 40 hours of lessons on sexual assault, the judge added.

Squid Game, a Netflix series that explores a dark world where marginalized people are forced to compete in bloody competitions with popular children’s titles, rapidly gained acclaim.

It attracted a remarkable 111 million people in less than four months of its 2021 release.

Following the likes of the Oscar-winning movie Parasite and the K-pop group BTS, South Korea’s popularity has grown with the success of the show.

Numerous statistics in South Korea’s film industry have been accused of sexual assault, including the later director Kim Ki-duk and actor Cho Jae-hyun.
