SINGAPORE: A spurned man who attacked his ex-lover with a knife and chopper, leaving her permanently scarred, was sentenced on Friday ( Dec 6 ) to 16 years ‘ jail and five strokes of the cane.
Chong Shiong Hui, 45, pleaded guilty on Nov 28 to a fee of attempted murder. Another two evil fees, which relate to his prior acts, were taken into account for punishment.  ,
In punishment, Justice Aidan Xu@Aedit Abdullah said Chong’s assault on his ex-lover Joey Lee was “vicious, steady and continual”.
Many attacks occurred over a period of minutes, and the victim suffered numerous scars.
She suffered axe and stab sores, including to her head, face, neck and chest, as well as her arms. Her bone had numerous fractures, and she was entirely disfigured.
The trial had sought 16 to 18 years ‘ prisons and five or six breaths of the wood, while Chong’s attorney, Joyce Khoo, argued for around 10 years ‘ prison along with five strokes of the wood.  ,
Justice Xu claimed that the defense wanted a sentence that was “far to small and would not reveal the viciousness of the attack on the victim.”
THE ATTACK
Before they split up in 2002, Chong and Ms Lee had a brief dated.  ,
In August 2017, they reconnected. Both of them were now married by that point, and they had begun an adulterous relationship.
Ms. Lee’s father finally learned about the relationship in November 2018.  , A year later, the target decided to end the matter with Chong.
She sent Chong a concept on Nov 28, 2019, to suggest she “wanted to take a break from their relationship”.
Over the next two times, Chong constantly threatened to upset the prey, her then-six-year-old girl, her husband, or himself.  ,
On November 29, 2019, he continued to e-mail the sufferer with threats after having drunk the night before.
The next day, after a visit to Ms Lee went unresolved, Chong went to her house at about 4am, bringing a helicopter, two tins of diesel, smoking and a lighter.
He continued to drink from a bottle of water and cognac.
In an effort to get her attention, Chong even deflated the tires on her husband’s car and turned off the victim’s major change.
He called the target and her father at around 7 a.m. and went back to her home. He likewise continued to bombard her with threats, including a photo of the car and truck.
Chong’s parents ‘ house was the setting for Ms. Lee’s visit.
At about 1pm on Nov 30, 2019, Chong went to his relatives ‘ home in the Toh Tuck place. He had with him a berry weapon, as well as the helicopter and diesel. He even took a knife from his parents ‘ home.
Chong pulled the target through the front wall when she arrived at 1.25 p.m. To improve the hand on his weapon, he was wearing a sleeve.
Before slashing her on the arm, he argued with her before pointing the heli at her. She fled to the yard, but he grabbed her by the chest and then attacked her once more.
The target defends herself with a plant pot after Chong hurt her back and head.
During the assault, the man picked up a handsaw to try and strike his ex-lover, but it was too unmanageable.
The target fled through the open doorway after Chong’s parents returned home.
However, the abuse persisted; Chong slammed her on the back. After she fell, he stamped on her, including on her head and back.
He simply stopped when his 72-year-old family caught up with him.
When officers arrived, the target was covered in blood and accompanied by Chong’s family. Chong identified himself as the aggressor and was taken into custody.  ,
Fixed Marks
The prey had fractured her bones and left lasting scars on various body parts.
She received a two-month hospitalization left, and as a result of her injuries, she developed head alopecia, or hair loss.
Ms. Lee also experiences numerous flashes of the abuse, which makes it difficult to fall asleep. Concerned that Chong may get revenge, the household moved home.
The prosecutor was informed that Chong did not include mental health issues or substance use disorders.
LURED VICTIM
The judge referred to Chong’s steps as “escalating and persistent” and stated that his actions on the night of the attack demonstrated a” clear severe and prolonged intent to cause harm.”
” You lured the target to your kids ‘ place, where she intended to speak to you to end your marriage, but you chose instead to make use of the premises, to capture her, harm her and then strike her, when she did not give in to your appeal to continue”, said Justice Xu.
The prosecutor said the main punishment goal is deterrence and punishment, and that any opportunity for treatment is displaced, calling it a” cunning snare for the victim.”
He claimed that Chong had planned the attack by bringing swords and gasoline and that his actions were” not the misguided activities of a young childish man.”
Because he had escorted the victim inside the doors, which immediately locked them, she had no other options.
In asking for a word of 10 years ‘ prisons and five strokes of the wood, the army lawyer said Chong had been driven by an “intense sentiment of treachery” and that he was “deeply regretful” for his actions.
However, the judge argued that there was little to be done to mitigate the aggravating factors and that a 10-year sentence would not adequately reflect the aggravating factors. The only real mitigatory factor in Chong’s favour was his guilty plea, added the judge.
In sentencing, Justice Xu said:” I have concluded that the circumstances of the commission of the offence, as well as the factors present, point to the need for retribution and general deterrence, far outweighing any rehabilitative aspects, or any mitigatory factors in your favour”.
