South Korea’s leadership crisis in hands of Constitutional Court

The Constitutional Court will decide the fate of President Yoon Suk Yeol and excellent minister Han Duck-soo, both of whom were impeached and suspended from energy after a brief period of martial law.

Han, who was impeached on Friday ( Dec 27 ), replaced Yoon, who was impeached on Dec 14. He had taken over as acting president. Under the law, Choi Sang-mok, the finance secretary, will then serve as the acting president.

The jury held its second reading in a situation on Friday to determine whether to restore Yoon or eliminate him entirely from power.

Following the vote to remove Han, the ruling liberal People Power Party filed a court order, contending that a simple majority was insufficient to remove an acting president.

Yoon’s presidential powers were revoked on December 14 and he continues to serve, protecting his legal immunity from all charges, aside from crime and rebellion.

Within 180 time, the Constitutional Court may decide whether to remove him from office or to grant his constitutional rights. A national vote had been held within 60 days if Yoon is removed or he steps down.

Opposition Democratic Party lawmaker Jung Chung-rae, the mind of legislature’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee, is leading the situation for removing Yoon.

Yoon’s legal counsel included previous Constitutional Court spokesperson Bae Bo-yoon and former attorney Yoon Kab-keun, who appeared at Friday’s reading.

A test is also anticipated to be held on whether Han should be removed from office or reinstated to his position.
